Roadmaps tend to grow by addition. A customer asks for something, a competitor launches something, a stakeholder has an idea. Features accumulate, and the product becomes harder to use.
Friction is the real cost
Friction is any moment where a user hesitates: unclear labels, too many steps, slow pages, surprising errors, forms that ask for information they should already have. Each one lowers activation, retention and trust.
How to find friction
- Watch five real users complete your core task and note every pause.
- Review funnel drop-off to see where people leave.
- Read support tickets for repeated confusion.
- Measure page speed and error rates on key screens.
- Time how long a new user takes to reach their first success.
Fix before you add
Before building a new feature, ask whether the existing journey can be shortened. Removing a step is often worth more than adding a capability. Teams that measure time-to-value and relentlessly reduce it end up with fewer features and happier users.
